My Journey as a writer

Background in storytelling

5 years ago, I joined Ravensbourne University London. Thrashed around by the seas of high-school academia, I moved from Norwich with the idea of becoming a cinematographer. I wasn’t sure if this was the path that I would stay on, but I knew that I had always loved storytelling, and that was my northern star.

While I enjoyed working behind the camera, each project I shot gave me this nagging feeling that what I was doing wasn’t quite right. Cinematography was too technical. The academic essays I wrote however were different, writing to compel the reader, infusing my work with narrative structure and emotion, it felt natural. In my second year, I made a complete U-turn and (despite missing the module by that point) decided to take screenwriting as my final exam.

This decision came with a lot of stress (and maybe some confusion on my tutor’s part) but in the trying work, I discovered my strength as a writer and put myself on a new path. After finishing university (yes, I graduated) I spent the next year caring for this passion and discovered work as a freelance copywriter.

My path wasn’t straightforward but has put me in a very unique position to cater for the brands who aren’t only looking for strong writing ability but someone who will tell the story behind their work.
